What changed for 2026–27 ✨

The handbook updates that actually affect homeschool families, minus the legalese.

💰 Money, funding & deadlines
  • Confirm on time or risk the year: renewals confirm by June 15, 2026, new students by July 15, 2026. Only accept if your student will use the scholarship at the start of the year — students found enrolled full-time in public school forfeit it.
  • Grade-level changes: you can request them any time in EMA, but changes made after the DOE assigns your award won't change the funding amount.
  • Funding errors: SUFS will try to reach you three times to fix an error blocking funding. After three misses, the student is marked declined/withdrawn for the year — answer that call!
  • Switching SFOs: unused funds from a previous scholarship account stay available until spent (under the original program's rules).
  • Interest: SUFS confirmed it doesn't profit from interest accrued in student accounts.
  • Pre-authorizations for 2026-27 must be in by May 28, 2027.
🛒 Purchasing guide: newly eligible
  • Rentals are in: musical instrument rentals and sports-gear rentals (helmets, bats, gloves, pads) are now eligible.
  • Sports supplies unlocked: balls, racquets, goals and nets are now "supplies" — no more frequency-of-purchase limit.
  • Gardening grew: trellises, drip irrigation, bulbs, fruit & vegetable plants and fruit trees added.
  • Photo/video: tripods, microphones and lenses moved to eligible supplies.
  • Sports camps simplified: submit under Sports Lessons, no provider credentials required.
  • Homeschool program fees: no more "published tuition schedule" or "physical location" requirements — and fees can be reimbursed from the prior school year once the program is approved.
🚫 Purchasing guide: newly prohibited
  • Toy weapons of every kind — Nerf, airsoft, BB and water guns, toy swords, slingshots, dart guns and more.
  • Concerts and meet-and-greet events (ticketed events are limited to plays, musicals, orchestral performances).
  • Theme-park extras: photos, souvenirs, premium access and special-event tickets beyond basic admission.
  • Smart/AR prescription glasses, pet beds & cushions, costume & fine jewelry, and general household expenses.
  • Adult-only training and conferences with no student activities.
  • Reminder that stays put: PEP funds can't buy laptops, computers, tablets or peripherals — that's Florida law, not an SUFS choice.
📋 Program rules & eligibility
  • No letter of intent needed: PEP students are registered with their SFO — you don't file a home-education letter of intent with the school district.
  • Switching into PEP from FTC/FES-EO or FES-UA must happen by the April 30 application deadline.
  • Simpler paperwork: first-time applicants who are 6 on Sept 1 no longer need a birth certificate/passport; a district letter or email now works for the full-time-enrollment crosscheck.
  • Dual enrollment is spelled out: eligible when credits count toward high-school completion plus a certificate or degree.
  • Frequency limits clarified: one of each specific item per category every 1–2 years (one easel + one kiln = fine; two easels = no).

PEP questions we hear every week

Can I pay for math classes or tutoring with PEP funds?

Yes. Part-time tutoring and instruction are core PEP-eligible expenses. Because Math Mavericks is a Step Up direct-pay provider, our $270/month tuition is billed directly to your student's scholarship account — you never pay out of pocket and wait for reimbursement.

Can I buy a laptop or tablet with the PEP scholarship?

No. Under Florida law, FTC-PEP funds cannot be used for digital devices or related peripherals — including laptops, computers and tablets — whether through the MyScholarShop store or by reimbursement. Families needing a device typically budget for it outside the scholarship.

Do PEP students need to file a letter of intent with the school district?

No. PEP students are registered with their Scholarship Funding Organization (like Step Up For Students) instead — the 2026-27 handbook confirms no district letter of intent is required to establish the home education program.

What are the big 2026-27 PEP deadlines?

April 30, 2026 to switch into PEP from another scholarship; June 15, 2026 for renewal families to confirm; July 15, 2026 for new families to confirm; and May 28, 2027 for pre-authorization requests. Attestation and withdrawal deadlines were also added in July — check EMA for your student's dates.

What happens to unused funds if I switch scholarship organizations?

Unused funds in your student's previous scholarship account remain accessible until the balance is spent — but they must be used under the rules of the original scholarship program.
