Meet your teacher

Hi, I’m Mrs. Brooke

A Florida-certified math teacher on a mission to make math the subject your child looks forward to — taught in person, in groups small enough that no question goes unanswered.

The teacher behind Math Mavericks

Brooke Johnson, M.Ed.

I’m Brooke — a certified math teacher, curriculum developer, and mom who believes every child can be a “math person.” For more than a decade I’ve taught math in classrooms and one-on-one, from kindergarten counting all the way up to pre-calculus, and the pattern is always the same: kids don’t hate math, they hate feeling lost in math.

Math Mavericks is my answer to that. Small in-person groups, a curriculum built for how kids actually learn, and a teacher who notices the moment a student starts to drift — and catches them before they fall behind.

Experience & credentials

A real teacher, not a worksheet service

When you hand your child’s math education to someone, credentials matter. Here’s what stands behind every Math Mavericks class.

Master of Education in Teaching & Learning, plus a B.A. in Psychology.

My teaching philosophy

How I turn “I’m bad at math” into “I’ve got this”

👀

I catch the drift early

In a small group I can see the exact moment a concept stops clicking — and reteach it on the spot, before it becomes a gap that follows a child for years.

🧠

I teach the “why”

Memorized steps fall apart under pressure. We build real understanding with hands-on models, so math holds up on the test and in the next grade.

🏆

I build confidence on purpose

Every session is designed for small wins that stack. Kids leave believing they’re capable — and that belief is what keeps them going.

Why I started Math Mavericks

Homeschool families deserved a math teacher of their own

Homeschooling gives families incredible freedom — but math is the subject parents tell me they dread most. It moves fast, it builds on itself, and one shaky year can shake a child’s confidence for the rest of school.

I started Math Mavericks so Lakeland-area homeschool families could hand math to an experienced, certified teacher without giving up the small-group, personal attention that makes homeschooling work. Your student gets real instruction and a real relationship with their teacher — and you get your afternoons back.

The teachers behind Math Mavericks

Mrs. Brooke isn’t doing this alone. These are the experienced teachers who share the Math Mavericks classroom — and the belief that every student can become a confident mathematician.

Candie Knight, Math Mavericks math and financial literacy teacher

Candie Knight, B.S.Ed.

Math & financial literacy teacher

I’m Candie — a math teacher, financial literacy instructor, and homeschool mom who believes every student is capable of becoming a confident mathematician. My favorite moments are when a challenging problem suddenly clicks and a student realizes, “I can do this!”

My journey in mathematics has taken me from tutoring College Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics at Florida Southern College to teaching Pre-Algebra and Advanced Algebra in the classroom. Today, I teach Financial Literacy and Science at Integrity School of the Arts, where I enjoy helping students connect mathematics to everyday life through budgeting, decision-making, and real-world problem solving.

For more than two decades, I’ve taught students in public schools, private schools, homeschool communities, and one-on-one tutoring. Whether we’re exploring algebraic thinking, solving challenging problems, or celebrating those exciting “aha!” moments, my goal is always the same: to help students build confidence, think critically, and discover the joy and beauty of mathematics.

That’s why I’m so excited to be part of Math Mavericks — because I believe every child can grow into a capable, confident mathematical thinker with the right encouragement and guidance.

Makai Wise, Math Mavericks teacher

Makai Wise

Teacher & technology enthusiast

I’m Makai — a teacher and technology enthusiast who loves seeing what happens when students become curious enough to ask questions. There’s something special about watching a student wrestle with an idea, ask why, and finally reach that moment when it begins to make sense.

I graduated from Canandaigua Academy High School in New York, earning an Advanced Regents Diploma with mastery in both Math and Science. I also completed a certification in Computer and Information Technology through Finger Lakes Technical Career College. I’ve since taught Intensive Math and World History at Lakeland Highlands Middle School and currently teach World History and Economics at Integrity School of the Arts.

I love helping students feel comfortable asking questions, trying different approaches, and discovering that getting stuck is simply part of figuring something out. That’s what I’m excited to bring to Math Mavericks — a classroom where students can tackle challenges, build confidence, and have some fun along the way.

Outside the classroom, I’ve recently fallen in love with theatre and musical productions and regularly perform locally. I also enjoy cooking for my family — who have recently discovered that I’m apparently pretty good at it!

Monica Moore, Math Mavericks teacher

Monica Moore, B.S.

Teacher & homeschool educator

I’m Monica — a teacher, homeschool mom, and lifelong learner who believes some of the best learning happens when students are actively engaged. Whether we’re building, creating, exploring, or solving problems together, I love helping students discover that learning is exciting, meaningful, and connected to the world around them.

Over the past two decades, I’ve taught in public schools, homeschool communities, church ministries, and enrichment programs. From history and literature to science, engineering, life skills, and Bible, I’ve enjoyed helping students grow in both knowledge and confidence. One of my favorite classes has been Engineering with Recyclables, where students learned to think creatively, persevere through challenges, and discover that great ideas often begin with simple materials.

Those same skills — curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, and perseverance — are at the heart of mathematics. That’s what excites me about Math Mavericks: helping students embrace challenges, build confidence, and discover that they are capable of more than they ever imagined.

Getting to know us

Questions parents ask me first

I hold a Master of Education in Teaching & Learning and a B.A. in Psychology, and I’m Florida Certified in Mathematics for grades 5–9. I’ve taught middle-school math and Algebra 1 in the classroom for six years and tutored for over ten, from kindergarten through pre-calculus.

I teach alongside a small, hand-picked team of experienced teachers — you’ll meet them above. Your student stays with the same teacher all year; there’s no rotating roster of tutors. That consistency is a big part of why students make progress.

Intentionally small. The whole model depends on my being able to see each student’s work and catch confusion the moment it appears, so groups stay small enough for genuinely personal attention.

Classes and events are held in the Lakeland, FL area, serving homeschool families across Polk County including Winter Haven, Auburndale, and Bartow. Reach out at (951) 565-0327 for current class locations and times.

Yes — Math Mavericks is a Step Up for Students direct-pay provider, so PEP and homeschool scholarship funds can pay tuition directly. See the Tuition & Scholarships page for details.
