Math Mavericks LLC is a homeschool-focused math program based in Lakeland, Florida, serving families across Polk County. Every class is taught in person, in small groups, by Brooke Johnson, M.Ed. — a Florida-certified math teacher — not a rotating roster of tutors. This guide covers what programs are available, where classes are held, and how to pay for them with a Florida PEP scholarship.
What math programs does Math Mavericks offer?
Math Mavericks offers four in-person homeschool math programs that form a continuous path from early elementary through high-school credit. Each class is taught by a certified teacher in a small group, with a personalized curriculum matched to the student’s grade and gaps.
- Elementary Math (K–5) — number sense, fractions, and fact fluency through hands-on activities.
- Middle School Math (6–8) — ratios, integers, and pre-algebra foundations.
- Algebra 1 — a complete, transcript-ready high-school credit.
Not sure where your student fits? Grade level on paper doesn’t always match where a homeschooler actually is in math, so we place each student after a short, no-pressure conversation. See all four on the programs page.
Where does Math Mavericks teach in Polk County, FL?
Math Mavericks serves homeschool families throughout Polk County, Florida, with classes and events held in the Lakeland area. Families travel from four main communities, each within a short drive of the Lakeland / Lake Gibson area where classes meet.
- Lakeland, FL — our home base and primary class location.
- Winter Haven, FL — about 30 minutes east via US-92.
- Auburndale, FL — roughly 20 minutes between Lakeland and Winter Haven.
- Bartow, FL — about 25 minutes south via US-98.
Can I use the PEP or Step Up for Students scholarship for math classes?
Yes. Math Mavericks is a Step Up for Students direct-pay provider, so Florida’s Personalized Education Program (PEP) scholarship can pay tuition directly — most families pay nothing out of pocket and never wait on a reimbursement. Here’s how the direct-pay process works:
- Confirm your student has an active PEP scholarship through Step Up for Students.
- Enroll with Math Mavericks and choose your student’s program.
- We bill your PEP account directly for tuition — no upfront payment, no reimbursement paperwork.
Full details, including what PEP funds can and can’t cover, are on our Tuition & Scholarships page, and our plain-English PEP purchasing guide breaks down exactly what you can buy under the 2026–27 handbook.
How much do Math Mavericks classes cost?
Math Mavericks tuition is a flat $270 per month, which covers your student’s weekly class and curriculum. New students pay a one-time $100 enrollment fee ($50 for annual re-enrollment), and there is no year-long contract. For families using a PEP or Step Up for Students scholarship, these costs are typically paid in full from scholarship funds via direct pay, so most families have no out-of-pocket expense.
How do the small-group classes work?
Classes are in person and intentionally small, so the teacher can see each student’s work in real time and catch confusion the moment it appears — the opposite of a screen-only class. Students meet weekly with the same certified teacher, work a curriculum built for how kids actually learn, and take home enrichment to keep momentum between sessions. That consistency is what turns “I’m bad at math” into steady, visible progress.
